American Woodworker has too many ads, Wood magazine is great with at least 6 complete project plans per issue. woodsmith and shopnotes are basically the same type format, no ads--lots of good plans. fine woodworking seems to be geared toward more manual and ornate woodworking, lots of articles on hand planes and scrapers. woodwokers journal is very similiar to Wood minus all the plans. my personal choice would have to be Wood Magazine, put out by Better Homes and Garden. very informative and all the ads are pretty much stuffed in the back of the magazine.
