You can cuy the tenons on a table saw with a dado blade or a regular blade if you have the patience.
You can drill out for a mortise if you are good with a hand drill than square up with a chisel.
No easy answer for the mortises, but I compared the options at www.plesums.com/wood/tips/mortise.html
Bottom line - I tried all the tricks without spending money, except for the bandaids for the blisters on my hands. Eventually I bought a drill press with mortise kit.
