  • Launching the next batch of boxes!

    Hey gang,

I had a disappointing trip to a local lumber yard looking for the Maple stock I need for a hanging wall cabinet...a good excuse to start building some more boxes, eh?

I'll be building more of the small Doug Stowe designed boxes, plus one or two of my own design. I've got nine different woods in the works for this run so far, and I still haven't selected all the lids or splines! Check it out...

I'm doing a much larger batch this time around to maximize the use of my set-up time. One of these will even be my first box commission (trade for a silver jewelry piece for my lovely bride's upcoming birthday.)

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!

Don't forget to send Mr. Stowe his royalty payments for
any of his designed boxes that you may sell.

Good point Jim. Does anyone know if there is a royalty requirement if it's a published plan? These are from one of his books.

I've seen others selling these boxes, or slight variations of them. I'll have to hunt down those posts where I've seen them and ask those folks the same question.

Hey, I was just yankin' ya.
What Doug don't know won't hurt him and I won't tell.

I remember a couple of threads on this topic. Here's one:

          Legal help

I have never had any hesitation in selling furniture that followed published plans. But I would probably contact them if I were to "mass produce" the items. Doug Stowe has a website if you would feel better about contacting him first. I'm sure he gets that question often.

This thread reminded me of a note I came across recently regarding building items from their plans for resale. The verbiage was that you could build all you wanted for personal use and gifts, but there was a limit to the number allowed to be built for sale (limit was something like 5 or 10).

For the life of me I can't recall where I saw it. (like many of you I am sure, I read a great number of woodworking mags and books as well as online stuff). Already spent 20 minutes searching online trying to find it. (gonna bug me)

This of course has nothing to do with Mr. Stowe and his designs, but is food for thought that at least some publications plans/designs are of limited use for resale.

Maybe I will send Doug and e-mail. I've already exchanged a couple e-mails with him already. I've seen one or two others who are selling this same design of box. Maybe they make some variations?

I use them mostly for gifts, but was thinking about putting an etsy site together and see what happens.
