    Hi guys,
    I'm fairly new to woodworking, recently graduated from a chainsaw and an axe. I went a little crazy a while back at the 'RIDGID store' and I can say I'm thoroughly pleased with their products.

    My question is, how do you properly install a 1/4" brass insert nut into a 3/8" hole without the wood lifting and splintering? The holes were drilled with a drillpress.

    I'm working with two identical pieces one of oak and the other is pine. Of course I finished sanded and varnished everything as I thought they would just thread in.........not.

    Help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

      After you drill your initial hole, chamfer the edges of it. That should stop the edges from lifting. To get the insert in straight, I use my drill press, unplug it first. Cut the head off a bolt, or use some ready rod in the drill chuck. Put a jam nut on it, thread the insert on and then tighten the jam nut. Turn the chuck by hand and the insert will thread into your wood nice and straight.

        +1 on Brian's technique.

        Chamfering holes is also very useful in other situations. For example, if yu need to put a wood screw into wood that's been finished with lacquer or the like, a chamfer on th pilot hole will keep the finish from chipping when you drive in the screw. Even if the wood isn't finished, the chamfer keeps the wood from displacing around the screw and puckering up above flush. I use this simple trick when mounting pickguards, strap buttons or other hardware on electric guitars and basses... works better and gives a nice professional look.
