Charlie, didn't know there was a code for this? Unless you were trying to keep critters in or out, what would the height or spacing matter? Post and rail is wide open, so why should picket be any different. I would keep spacing to the width of a picket just for looks. Frank

Many cities have codes on fencing--and they are probably all different. You would have to check with your local building department.

charlie, i think that spacing would only come into play if there was a drop off on the other side. height is usually not to exceed 6' for yard boundaries.

are you going to nail it or screw it

height and spacing might be a factor is you are enclosing a yard with a pool in it.

For handrails, a 4" sphere cannot pass anyplace thru it.

Check your local building codes. I used to issue building permits for a living, and I can assure you that it will not only become a matter of code compliance law, but also liability if some child or animal gets harmed as a result of non compliance. Cover thy butt twice on this one!
