  • is oak a good choice????................

when living in california i build an outdoor table out of redwood. i was pleased with everything against the top and the finish. i did a bad job on the finish, and it did not last. and the top was just bad construction.

anyway, the frame of this table is great. the redwood did not hold up too well with a bad finish to the harsh chicago winter. i plan on cleaning up and refinishing the frame correctly this year, and rebuilding the top. i came across a hell of a price on rough sawn oak and would like to make a solid oak top. is this a good outdoor wood? i imagine any wood is good for outdoors if the proper finish is used?

    thanks folks

Everything I hear is that white oak is good for exterior use, but red oak is not. Red oak is much more open pore, and will absorb too much water.

Finish will not protect the wood enough to allow the use of the "wrong" wood.

I agree with Charlie P. White oak, cyprus, cedar, teak.
