being the age it is and cast drain plumbing there is a small possibility that it could have a Drum trap, and if that is the type of trap it has, most likely one will not able to clean or get a snake through it. If that is the case the trap will most likely need to be replaced. with a P trap similar to what is under most sinks,
if it a standard trap then one may be able to work the snake thought the drain, (normally one will enter through the over flow and then down through the trap, normally the over flow pipe is in line with the actual drain piping,

I am going to suggest you ask your soon to be SIL for some advice,
