here is a link to harbor freight tools. mostly chinese cheap tools, but some actually work pretty good. these are 1/8'' shaft and 1'' cutter wheel. good for tile and cutting from the inside of drains. pretty cheap too to try.

OP here. The removal/replacement was successful. I don't hover over plumbers, electricians, etc. as they work, so I don't know what my plumber used to remove the drain. I noticed that he left for a while in in his van; he told me later that he'd gone to borrow a better tool.
