As far as what uses the standard insert that came with my saw goes, I don't use it, I threw it away. Homemade ZCI's are very easy and cheap to make. I have ZCI's for all of the dado cuts I've made with this saw as well as beveled angled cuts. I always have a few blanks ready to go in case a cut comes up that I don't have a ZCI for. I just take a marker and write on the bottom side of the ZCI what the dado width or angle is. Another big plus for using ZCI's is that they help to minimize the amount of sawdust that reaches the saws tabletop.
